Japanese: ノウサギ(野兎) - ノウサギ(英語表記)Japanese hare
Japanese hare (Japanese hare)
A wild rabbit (illustration) that lives in the plains to high mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It is also called the Echigo rabbit, Yamausagi, or Nihon rabbit. Its body shape is similar to that of the domestic rabbit, but it has long front legs and short ears. Its hind legs are large, measuring 15 cm in length, and it can use these like snowshoes to run swiftly on soft snow. In summer, its body color is gray-brown or dark brown, while in winter, it can be brown or completely white except for the tips of its black ears. The latter are found in areas with heavy snowfall, mainly in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions.
