A perennial herb of the Berberidaceae family. The underground stem is well developed. There are several scale leaves at the base of the aboveground stem. The leaves are usually two, shield-shaped, 6-8 lobes, and bordered with fine serrations. A cyme emerges between the two leaves. All the flowers droop. There are nine sepals, six to nine dark purple petals, four to six stamens with anthers that split vertically, and each pistil is lobed and has many ovules. The fruit ripens into purple berries. Several species are distributed in Taiwan and mainland China, and the rhizomes and roots of the Dysosma genus are mainly used as an antidote for snakebites and as an anti-inflammatory agent.

メギ科の多年草。地下茎がよく発達する。地上茎の基部には数枚の鱗片葉がある。葉は通常2枚で，楯状，6～8浅裂し，こまかい鋸歯でふちどられる。2枚の葉の間から集散花序が出る。花はすべて垂れ下がっている。萼片9枚，花弁は暗紫色で6～9枚，4～6本のおしべの葯は縦裂開し，めしべは1本1室で多数の胚珠がある。果実は紫色の漿果（しようか）に熟す。台湾，中国大陸に数種が分布し，ミヤオソウ属Dysosmaの根茎や根はおもにヘビにかまれたときの解毒剤として，あるいは消炎剤として用いられる。
