Tardenois Culture - Tardonoa Culture

A Mesolithic culture defined based on the remains of the Coincy and Bruyères sites in the Tardenois region of northern France. It is characterized by the way trapezoidal stone tools are made, with depressions on both edges of the blade and then broken off (the Tardenois technique). It was distributed mainly in northern France and existed from around 8000 BC to after 3000 BC. In southern France, similar stone tool cultures of the same period, known as the Saubterre and Châteauneuf cultures, are found. While Neolithic farmers settled in fertile lands, the Tardenois culture continued to live as hunter-gatherers, living in open areas close to water sources but on dry land. Some of them continued to maintain the same lifestyle until the Bronze Age.

北フランス、タルドノア地方のコワンシー、ブリュイェール両遺跡の遺物をもとに定義された中石器時代の文化。台形石器の作り方に特色があり、石刃(せきじん)の両縁に凹部をつくり、そこを折っている（タルドノア技法）。北フランスを中心に分布し、紀元前8000年ごろから前3000年以降まで存在した。南フランスでは、同じ年代にソブテール文化、シャトーヌフ文化とよばれるよく似た石器文化がみられる。新石器農耕民が肥沃(ひよく)な地に住み着いたのに対し、タルドノア文化の人々は狩猟採集の生業を続け、開地で水源に近い、しかし乾いた地に住むというように住み分けていた。そして一部は青銅器時代まで同じ生活様式を保持し続けた。
