A Mesolithic culture defined based on the remains of the Coincy and Bruyères sites in the Tardenois region of northern France. It is characterized by the way trapezoidal stone tools are made, with depressions on both edges of the blade and then broken off (the Tardenois technique). It was distributed mainly in northern France and existed from around 8000 BC to after 3000 BC. In southern France, similar stone tool cultures of the same period, known as the Saubterre and Châteauneuf cultures, are found. While Neolithic farmers settled in fertile lands, the Tardenois culture continued to live as hunter-gatherers, living in open areas close to water sources but on dry land. Some of them continued to maintain the same lifestyle until the Bronze Age. [Ichiro Yamanaka] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
