A Jewish rabbi and traveller born in Navarrese, Spain. He lived in Tudela in northern Spain. He set off on a long journey from his native Spain, which lasted 13 years, both for commercial purposes and to investigate the actual conditions of the Jews at that time. He passed through Europe and Persia, and reached the western border of China, and on his return journey passed through Egypt and Sicily. His travelogue not only conveys the actual conditions of the Jews in the 12th century, but is also a valuable documentary record of the observations of the first European to visit the Western Regions, even if some of the descriptions are somewhat inaccurate.

スペインのナバラ生れのユダヤ教ラビ，旅行家。スペイン北部のトゥデラTudelaに住んだ。商業上の目的と同時に，当時のユダヤ教徒の実情を探る意図から，故国スペインを振出しに13年間にわたる長途の旅に出ている。ヨーロッパ，ペルシアを経由し，中国の西辺まで足をのばし，帰路はエジプト，シチリアを通過している。彼の旅行記は12世紀のユダヤ教徒の実情を伝えるばかりでなく，記述にいささか不正確な点があるにせよ，最初に西域を訪れたヨーロッパ人の観察として資料的に貴重な価値をもつ。
