A town in Kamimashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. The west is in the southeastern Kumamoto Plain and the Mifune River basin, a tributary of the Midori River, and the east is hilly. The main settlements along the Mifune River were once known for sake brewing. The Kyushu Expressway runs through the town. The town produces high-quality rice, tobacco, beef cattle, and vegetables. 熊本県中部，上益城(かみましき)郡の町。西部は熊本平野南東部，緑川の支流御船川の流域，東部は丘陵地。御船川に沿う主集落はかつては酒造業で知られた。九州自動車道が通じる。良質の米を産し，タバコ，肉牛，野菜なども産する。近年は熊本市の郊外住宅地化が顕著。99.03km2。１万7888人（2010）。
