A town in Kamimashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. The west is in the southeastern Kumamoto Plain and the Mifune River basin, a tributary of the Midori River, and the east is hilly. The main settlements along the Mifune River were once known for sake brewing. The Kyushu Expressway runs through the town. The town produces high-quality rice, tobacco, beef cattle, and vegetables.
