Judoka. Born in Iwate Prefecture. Dropped out of Keio University. Entered the Kodokan in 1903, became an instructor at 7th dan in 1923, and reached his highest rank of 10th dan in 1945. Though small at 159cm tall and weighing 63kg (at his peak), he overcame his physical handicaps by practicing more than 7 hours a day and studying techniques diligently. Techniques he invented included "Daisha," "Sumiotoshi," and "Kyusha," but "Sumigaeshi," commonly known as "Kuuki-nage," is a technique in which the opponent is thrown with perfect timing, and is highly regarded as embodying the judo spirit of "softness overcomes hardness." He was active in practical instruction and kata demonstrations until his later years, and contributed to the spread of judo. In 1961, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit.
