Ambato (English spelling)

Japanese: アンバト(英語表記)Ambato
Ambato (English spelling)
The capital of Tungurahua Province in central Ecuador. It is located in a basin in the Andes Mountains, about 110 km south of the capital Quito, and is about 2,600 m above sea level. To the southwest, the country's highest peak, Chimborazo Volcano (6,310 m), rises. In 1821, the year before Ecuador's independence, the liberation army led by Ajéde Sucre won a victory over the Spanish army, and today it is the trading center for the surrounding agricultural areas. In addition to fruits from the Ambato Basin, sugar cane and grains are distributed here, and the city has industries such as tanning, leather, food, and textiles. Located in a volcanic area, it is often damaged by eruptions and earthquakes, and the city was particularly devastated by an earthquake in 1949, but old buildings such as the Renaissance cathedral remain. Miraflores, a suburb of the city, is known as a residential and villa area for the upper class. It is an important transportation hub, and the main railway line connecting Quito and Guayaquil, the Pan-American Highway, pass through it. The road to the Amazonas region east of the Andes branches off from it, and it is the entrance to the upper Amazon basin. It is the birthplace and grave of the writer J. Montalvo. Population: 124,166 (1990).
