The world of writing

Japanese:
The world of writing

A literary magazine. From March 1906 (Meiji 39) to December 1920 (Taisho 9). 204 issues in total. It was later renamed "Shinbungaku" in January of the following year, and ceased publication in December. 12 issues. Published by Hakubunkan. Edited by Tayama Katai, Hasegawa Tenkei, and Kano Sakujiro. At first it was a writing practice magazine that focused on letters to the editor, but it gradually changed into a literary magazine for submitted works, and published Kunikida Doppo's "Two Old Men" (1908), Shimazaki Toson's "Sakura no Mi no Jukusuru Toki" (1914), and Tayama Katai's "Ink Pot" (1909), becoming a base for the promotion of naturalism during its heyday. However, its characteristics as a magazine for letters to the editor became a constraint, and it ended up not being able to develop into a magazine for pure literature. However, the magazine's contribution of allowing general readers to participate in the literary world through submissions and of sending many of its submitters into the literary world was great, and it produced such writers as Kubota Mantaro, Uchida Hyakken, Okada Saburo, Hamada Hirosuke, and Mizuno Senko.
