Malmö (English spelling)
Malmöhus County is the capital of Malmöhus County, in the southern part of Sweden. It is a seaport facing the Øresund Strait and is Sweden's third largest industrial city. It faces Copenhagen in Denmark across the Øresund Strait. It was chartered as a city at the end of the 13th century, and in the late Middle Ages, when the herring trade in Malmö harbor flourished, many German merchants immigrated from Lübeck and it was called Ellbogen. It was a Danish territory until 1658. Modern port facilities began to be expanded in 1775, and the port's influence gradually grew. It is an important trading port, importing coal, petroleum, metals, and chemical products, and exporting grain, feed, sugar, cement, etc. Ships, vehicles, textiles, clothing, processed foods, etc. are also manufactured here. In addition to the 16th century town hall in the central square, there are many historical buildings such as Malmöhus Castle (16th century) and St. Peter's Cathedral (14th century). Population: 234,796 (1992 estimate).
