A military commander from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. He was the son of Tameyoshi and the uncle of Yoritomo. His real name was Yoshimori. After his father Tameyoshi was defeated in the Hogen Rebellion (1156), he hid in Kumano Shingu and called himself Shingu Juro. In 1180 (Jisho 4), he was summoned by Minamoto no Yorimasa, who served Emperor Mochihito, and changed his name to Yukiie. He disguised himself as a mountain ascetic and conveyed Emperor Mochihito's edicts to the Minamoto clan in various provinces. Soon after, Emperor Mochihito and Yorimasa were defeated, and Yukiie gathered troops in Owari, Mikawa, and other areas to fight against the Taira clan. He asked for his territory from Yoritomo in Kamakura, but was not accepted, so he eventually allied with Kiso Yoshinaka. In 83 (Juei 2), he entered Kyoto with Yoshinaka, had an audience with Emperor Goshirakawa, and was appointed as the Governor of Bizen, Junior Fifth Rank. However, he later came into conflict with Yoshinaka and retreated to Kii. After the downfall of the Taira clan (1185), he sided with Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was at odds with Yoritomo, and received an imperial edict to pursue and kill Yoritomo. He and Yoshitsune left Daimotsuura in Settsu (Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture) to go to the Western Sea to fight against Yoritomo, who had personally gone to war, but were shipwrecked in a strong wind and hid in Izumi, but the following year he was attacked by Hitachibo Shomyo, an assassin from Kanto, and was killed at Akaigawara on May 12, 12th year of Bunji.
