[Live] Guangxu 21 (1895).11.5. Fujian, Yong'an [Died] July 24, 1944. Shanghai Chinese journalist and political commentator. His real name was Enrun, and Taofen was his pen name. After graduating from St. John's University in Shanghai, he became editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Life in 1926, and after the outbreak of the Manchurian Incident in 1931, he began his anti-Japanese literary activities. In 1933, he organized the China League for the Protection of Civil Rights and served as an executive committee member, but as the Nationalist government's oppression intensified, he traveled abroad and visited Europe, the United States, and the Soviet Union. After returning to China in 1935, he founded the magazine Popular Life, and actively participated in the anti-Japanese movement, supporting the December 9th Movement. When the National All-Sectors National Salvation Association (NNA) was formed in June 1936, he became one of its leaders, and in July, together with NNA executives Shen Junru and Tao Xingzhi, he published "Some Basic Conditions and Minimum Demands for Unity and Defending Against Foreign Enemies," in which he argued that if all parties agreed to resist Japan and save the country, they could form a united front, that the Kuomintang should abandon "peace at home and expel foreigners," and that the Communist Party should ease up on class struggle. In November, he was arrested along with Shen Junru and Zhang Naiqi as one of the "Seven Gentlemen of the Anti-Japanese Movement," but was released after the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in July 1937. In August, he founded the journal "Anti-Japanese War" in Shanghai (later retitled "National Anti-Japanese War"), and in 1938, he was elected as a council member of the National Council, but resigned in 1941 and moved to Hong Kong, where he helped to form the China Democratic League.
