point de Venise à réseau (English spelling) point de Veniseareseau

...Alençon lace is also called the "queen of lace" because it can withstand washing and is durable. It has a wide mesh fabric with fleur-de-lis, polka dots, rosettes, bees, and other elegant floral patterns scattered all over it, and the outline is embroidered with a horsehair core and blanket stitch. Argentan lace is similar to Alençon lace, but is of higher quality and more expensive. In Italy at the time, there was a type of lace called point de Venise à réseau (meshed Venetian lace), which had a mesh fabric with flat woven floral patterns scattered all over it, but it is said to be an imitation of Alençon lace or an attempt to recreate the lightness of bobbin lace. In Brussels, Belgium, at that time, both bobbin lace and needlepoint lace were called point de Angleterre (English lace), and a delicate, transparent, inexpensive lace was made. It became popular in France and England, and eventually a thin, flexible type called point de gaze (thin lace) was created.
