A female peddler. Women have had a close relationship with markets and commerce since ancient times, and the name "Hisagime" appears in the "Wamyo-sho." Volume 31 of the "Konjaku Monogatarishu" contains a story about a "saleswoman" who gets drunk and sells "sushi sweetfish" that is soiled with vomit. In fishing villages, wives often sell the fish and shellfish that their husbands caught to neighboring farming villages and towns. These women peddlers were often called "itadaki," "sasage," "kaberi," "shoikagobote," "katsugikko," or "otata," based on the way they carried the goods.
