Japanese: 悪魔学 - あくまがく（英語表記）demonology

In a broad sense, it is a general term for the study of all the characteristics of evil spirits and demons, and the Western word for it is based on the compound of the Greek words daimōn and logos. In a narrow sense, it refers to the work of investigating the magic that witches and sorcerers acquired through pacts with the devil, which was brought to light by the Inquisition, which had become a major industry (K. Seligman), especially in the early modern period in Europe, and in this case the term satanology is also used. Demonologists include many inquisitors such as J. Sprenger and H. Cramer, who wrote The Malleus Maleficarum, and witch and madness investigators such as P. de Rankle, as well as J. Bodin and James I, and demonology itself is, so to speak, the study of the establishment.

広義には悪霊や悪魔の特性すべてを研究する学問の総称で，それを意味する西欧語はギリシア語のdaimōnとlogosの合成にもとづく。狭義にはとりわけヨーロッパ近世初頭に，あたかも〈一大産業と化した〉(K.セリグマン)異端審問によって明るみに出された魔女や妖術使いが悪魔との契約によって獲得した魔法を究明する作業をいい，この場合はサタノロジーsatanologyという語も使われる。悪魔学者には《魔女の槌》を著したJ.シュプレンガーやH.クラーマーのような異端審問官やP.deランクルのような魔女狂気調査官が多く，さらにはJ.ボーダン，ジェームズ1世らも有名で，悪魔学そのものはいわば体制の学問である。
