A colloquial name for epilepsy, which was widespread in ancient Greece and Rome. It was given this name because the sudden collapse and whole-body convulsions were interpreted as "the result of the will of God" from the magical worldview of the time, and in fact purification and prayer were widely used as treatments. Hippocrates famously criticized this, saying, "This disease is not particularly divine or holy, but arises from natural causes" (On the Sacred Disease).
