Also written as Nekoya. A settlement originating from the mansions of powerful clans that developed in medieval Japan. In the Middle Ages, the residences of headmen and lords were mainly located at the tops of hills and plateaus, and settlements of vassals and other subordinates were formed around the base of these. These settlements were called Negoya. They developed in various places from the Muromachi period to the Sengoku period, but are particularly common in the foothills of the Kanto region. The names vary by region, but place names such as Negoya, Horinouchi, Horigome, Minowa, and Yorii indicate the existence of such settlements. Settlements called Doi and Sange in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, and Fumoto, Fumoto, and Kakoi in the Kyushu region are of the same type.
