…A new iconography created in Germany in the early 14th century, depicting the Virgin Mary embracing her child and saying her final farewell before burial, separated from the temporal and spatial relationships of the narrative and made into an independent statue. It is one of the so-called "Andachtsbild" (prayer statues) that appeared in the late Middle Ages, and was made for individuals to pray before in hopes of the salvation of their souls.
