Sulfurous acid

Sulfurous acid

A dibasic acid thought to be produced in an aqueous solution of sulfur dioxide. It is usually expressed as H 2 SO 3. However, in reality, the production of H 2 SO 3 has not been observed, and it is actually sulfur dioxide hydrate, SO 2.n H 2 O,
SO 2n H 2 O―→HSO 3 - +H 3 O + +( n -2)H 2 O
It is best to do this. Even if a sulfurous acid solution is evaporated, no free acid is obtained. This is because the dissolved sulfur dioxide becomes a gas (sulfur dioxide) and escapes as it evaporates. It is weakly acidic, and produces sulfur dioxide when combined with strong acids. It acts as a strong reducing agent, and is oxidized by oxygen, halogens, and hydrogen peroxide to become sulfuric acid. It can also act as an oxidizing agent, although its reducing effect is weaker than that of a reducing agent, and it itself becomes sulfur. In addition to being used as a reducing agent, it is also used as a bleaching agent. Sulfur dioxide released into the atmosphere combines with suspended moisture to produce sulfurous acid, which then becomes sulfuric acid through photochemical reactions, causing air pollution.

  SO2nH2O―→HSO3-+H3O++(n-2)H2O
