...Most species are diurnal, but some, such as the largest species, the white-tailed mongoose ( Ichneumia albicauda ) (found in the southern Arabian Peninsula and sub-Saharan Africa), are nocturnal. Mongooses feed primarily on insects, lizards, birds, and small mammals, but some, such as the Meller's mongoose ( Rhynchogale melleri ) (eastern and southern Africa), prefer fruit, while others, such as the crab-eating mongoose, hunt for frogs, crabs, and fish. Some species, such as the banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) , are known to have the habit of breaking eggs by throwing them at stones.
