Euglena is a green, single-celled algae that grows in ponds, swamps, and puddles with a lot of organic matter, and is a member of the genus Euglena, or one of its species, E. proxima (illustration). In zoology, it is classified as a flagellate in the phylum Protozoa. It sometimes grows in large numbers, forming water blooms that turn the water green. There are many species in the Euglena genus, and since it was first discovered by Leeuwenhoek in 1674, over 150 species have been reported worldwide, of which about 20 species are known in Japan.
