British politician. Known as Pitt the Elder. He was highly respected by the people and known for his eloquence. He became a member of the House of Commons in 1735, and became famous for his criticism of Walpole and military reform. As the de facto Prime Minister, he led the Seven Years' War. From 1757 to 1761, he organized a coalition government, which led to overwhelming victories against the French in India and North America. He was created Earl of Chatham, and formed another coalition government from 1766 to 1768, but resigned due to illness. He showed sympathy for the American colonies, but was so outraged by their independence that he collapsed in the House of Commons and died of the illness.

英国の政治家。大ピットと呼ばれる。国民の信望を集め，雄弁をもって聞こえた。1735年下院議員になり，ウォルポール批判と軍事改革で名をあげ，事実上の首相として七年戦争を指導。1757年―1761年連立内閣を組織，インド・北米でフランスと争い圧倒的勝利をもたらした。チャタム伯に叙せられ，1766年―1768年再び連立内閣をつくったが，病いをえて辞職。アメリカ植民地には同情を示したが，その独立を憤慨して議場で倒れ，病没。
