Nihon Kouki - Chronicles of Japan

Japanese:
Nihon Kouki - Chronicles of Japan

A history book commissioned by imperial decree following Shoku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan Continued). It has 40 volumes and is the third of the Six National Histories (Rikkokushi). It is a chronological compilation of records from 792 (Enryaku 11) to 833 (Tencho 10) over 42 years during the reigns of the four emperors Kanmu, Heizei, Saga, and Junna. In 819 (Kōnin 10), under the direction of Emperor Saga, Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu, Fujiwara no Otsugu, and others began compiling it. After that, many of the editors other than Fujiwara no Otsugu died, so the work was carried over to the next Emperor Junna, who continued the work with new editors, but the emperor abdicated before sufficient results could be achieved, and the compilation stagnated.

During the reign of Emperor Ninmyo, several editors were appointed, including Fujiwara no Otsugu, and the work was completed in 840 (Jowa 7). Many parts have been lost, and currently only 10 volumes out of the 40 are known - volumes 5, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 20, 21, 22, and 24. The content is characterized by biographical descriptions that sharply criticize courtiers. One copy is the Sanjonishi family version, which was copied between 1524 and 1533 (Taei 4 and Tenbun 2). Included in the "Kokushi Taikei."
