Born in Nagoya as the son of a Nagoya feudal lord. Graduated from Tokyo Senmon Gakko (Waseda University) in 1887, and became a professor at the Higher Commercial School (Hitotsubashi University) in 1895. As a relative of Yokoi Chiaki, a scholar of Japanese classics who was a student of Motoori Norinaga, he was influenced by classical scholars such as Konakamura Kiyonori and Motoori Toyoaki, and his academic style combined documentary research with the actual state of social economy, establishing a general history of commerce and industry by field.
