Japanese: オオタニシ - おおたにし（英語表記）Japanese freshwater snail

This snail belongs to the family Pycnonotidae of the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. It is the largest of all Japanese snails, reaching a shell height of 70 mm and a shell diameter of 45 mm. The spiral layer is weakly inflated, and the shell opening is somewhat long and circular. Like other snails, it is viviparous, producing 20 to 30 fetuses, which are characterized by a sharp, top-shaped shell with a height of 8 mm.

軟体動物門腹足綱タニシ科の巻き貝。日本産タニシ類のなかでは最大で、殻高70ミリメートル、殻径45ミリメートルに達する。螺層(らそう)の膨らみ方は弱く、殻口はいくらか長い円形である。ほかのタニシ類と同じく胎生で、胎子数は20～30個、殻高8ミリメートルの周縁の角立ったこま形が特徴である。
