Zaigomachi - Zaigomachi

Japanese:
Zaigomachi - Zaigomachi
In the Edo period, this refers to areas that were murakata (under the control of the county magistrate) but functioned as towns. Depending on the region, they were called zaimachi, gomachi, chobun, machiba, machimura, etc. In the Edo period, there was a legal distinction between cities, towns, and villages, but towns that were recognized as towns but had a mixed agricultural and commercial population were sometimes called zaimachi. There are several types of zaimachi: those that were centered around the camps of minor daimyo, elder retainers, and magistrates (jinya-machi), those that were formed at important transportation hubs such as post stations and ports, and those that were bases for the production and distribution of specialty products. Since agriculture and commerce were not separated, peasants lived in these areas, but merchants and industrialists often also owned farmland. →Zaimachi merchants/castle towns→Related topics Uji | Suita | Suita [city] | Hiranogo
