Most bilirubin is produced from hemoglobin in red blood cells that have reached the end of their lifespan, and is sent to the liver where it is conjugated with glucuronic acid (this is called conjugated or direct bilirubin, while bilirubin before conjugation is called unconjugated or indirect bilirubin), becomes water-soluble, and is excreted with bile. Even if there is no liver damage, if the amount of bilirubin produced exceeds the liver's capacity due to hemolysis or other reasons (in this case the concentration of indirect bilirubin increases), liver cells are damaged, or the flow of bile is obstructed, causing abnormalities in this process, resulting in jaundice. …
