Hijikawa River

Japanese: 肱川 - ひじかわ

A river that flows northwest through the western part of Ehime Prefecture. Its total length is 102 km. Its upper reaches are called the Uwa River, and it flows through the Ozu Basin, emptying into the Iyo Sea at Nagahama, northwest of Ozu City. Compared to the size of the river, there is little flat land, and even at the mouth of the river, there is almost no open alluvial lowland. Before land transportation developed, river boats traveled from the mouth of the river to Sakaishi (→Nomura), and it was also used for floating timber. The river basin was prone to flooding in the past, but in 1951 it was designated as a specific area for the comprehensive development of southwestern Shikoku, and in 1959 the Shikanogawa Dam was completed in Hijikawa Town and a levee was completed in the Ozu Basin, reducing flood damage. The Nomura Dam was completed in 1981. It is used for power generation and various water uses. The gravel in the riverbed is a good building material. Cormorant fishing in Ozu is famous. The area around Shikanogawa Lake belongs to Hijikawa Prefectural Natural Park.

Hijikawa River

This is a former town area in the southeast of Ozu City, in the southwest of Ehime Prefecture. It is located in the middle reaches of the Hijikawa River. In 1943, the villages of Kawabe, Uwagawa, and Otani merged to form Hijikawa Village, and in 1955, parts of Kaibuki and Yokobayashi were incorporated. In 1959, it became a town. In 2005, it merged with Ozu City, Nagahama Town, and Kawabe Village to form Ozu City. Most of the area is mountainous, and forestry is the main industry. Cedar and cypress trees are planted, and in addition to rice, shiitake mushrooms, chestnuts, and tobacco are cultivated. The artificial lake shore of the Shikano River is the center of Hijikawa Prefectural Natural Park, and is famous for cherry blossoms, river fish dishes, and crucian carp fishing. There is an old yew tree at Nakano-Mishima Shrine. It is a place that carries on Otani Bunraku and Yamadorizaka Shime Kagura.

愛媛県西部を北西に流れる川。全長 102km。上流を宇和川と称し，大洲盆地を流れ，大洲市北西の長浜で伊予灘に注ぐ。河川規模に比べて平地が少なく，河口部でも沖積低地がほとんど開けていない。陸運の発達するまでは河口から坂石 (→野村 ) まで川舟が通い，木材流しにも利用された。流域は古来洪水が多かったが，1951年四国西南総合開発特定地域に指定され，1959年肱川町に鹿野川ダム，大洲盆地に堤防が完成し，水害は減少した。 1981年に野村ダムが完成。発電，各種用水に利用。川床の砂利は良質な建築材。大洲の鵜飼いは有名。鹿野川湖周辺は肱川県立自然公園に属する。

肱川
ひじかわ

愛媛県南西部，大洲市南東部の旧町域。肱川中流域に位置する。 1943年河辺村，宇和川村，大谷村の3村が合体して肱川村となり，1955年貝吹村，横林村両村の一部を編入。 1959年町制。 2005年大洲市，長浜町，河辺村と合体し大洲市となる。山地が大部分を占め，林業が主産業。スギ，ヒノキが植林され，米作のほか，シイタケ，クリ，タバコの栽培が行なわれる。人造湖の鹿野川湖畔は肱川県立自然公園の中心で，サクラと川魚料理，ヘラブナ釣りで有名。中野三島神社にはイチイガシの老木がある。大谷文楽と山鳥坂の鎮縄 (しめ) 神楽を伝える。
