A biennial herb of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). The stem is 0.4-1.5 meters tall. The leaves are deeply pinnately lobed, with sharp lobes, glabrous on both sides, and similar to carrot leaves. The basal leaves grow in clusters, but the leaves on the stem grow alternately. In August and September, the upper part of the stem branches out and produces panicles. The flower heads are spherical, 5-6 mm in diameter, and open downward. They grow in fields, riverbanks, and wastelands from Honshu to Kyushu, and are also found in Korea and China. It is thought to have been naturalized after being imported as a medicinal plant.
