Uttar Pradesh (state)

A state in northern India. It spreads across the Great Indian Plain in the middle reaches of the Ganges River. It is a huge state, with a population of 139.11 million (1991), the largest in the country, an area of 294,000 km2, the fourth largest, and a population density of 475 people/km2, the fourth largest after Bihar. The state capital is Lucknow. Around the 10th century BC, the Indo-Aryan people advanced from the Indus River area in the northwest and began to form the core region of the Indian subcontinent. In the 7th century BC, five states, including Panchala, Kosala, and Kashi, were established and competed for power with each other.

インド北部の州。ガンガー(ガンジス)川中流域のインド大平原に広がる。人口1億3911万(1991)は同国第1位，面積29万4000km2は第4位，人口密度475人/km2は，ビハール州に次いで第4位という巨大な州。州都はラクナウ。前10世紀ころには，北西のインダス川方面からインド･アーリヤ人が進出し，インド亜大陸支配の核心地域を形成しはじめた。前7世紀には，パンチャーラ，コーサラ，カーシーなど5国が成立し，互いに勢力を競った。
