A state in northern India. It spreads across the Great Indian Plain in the middle reaches of the Ganges River. It is a huge state, with a population of 139.11 million (1991), the largest in the country, an area of 294,000 km2, the fourth largest, and a population density of 475 people/km2, the fourth largest after Bihar. The state capital is Lucknow. Around the 10th century BC, the Indo-Aryan people advanced from the Indus River area in the northwest and began to form the core region of the Indian subcontinent.
