…A legendary queen of the ancient Orient. Daughter of the Syrian goddess Derketo (or Atargatis), she was a foundling raised by pigeons. She was discovered by a shepherd and became the wife of the governor Onnes. She and her husband, who was later made a general, accompanied the Assyrian king Ninos on his eastern expedition. When she captured Bactra thanks to her heroic efforts, Ninos, captivated by her bravery and beauty, sought her out, and in despair, Onnes committed suicide. Soon after Ninos died, Semiramis became queen and engaged in massive construction projects such as building cities, roads, and sewer systems in various parts of Mesopotamia and Iran. …
