A biennial grass of the Gramineae family (illustration) found in moist, sunny areas of fields. The stems have fibrous roots and grow somewhat clumpy, bending at the nodes from the short, horizontal lower part, and rise up to 20-40cm in height. The leaves are linear, 5-15cm long, 4-8cm wide, slightly soft, and whitish green. In May and June, panicles appear at the end of the stems. The inflorescences are cylindrical, discontinuous at the bottom, and densely packed with spikelets, 5-8cm long, 1-3cm wide, and pale green with a purplish tint.
