...This legend is said to have originated from a ritual in which the Chibcha chief of Bogotá made an annual offering to the spirits of Lake Guatavita and bathed in gold dust, which the Spaniards distorted and exaggerated. Numerous expeditions were organized in search of El Dorado, the most famous being the expedition from the north (Santa Marta) under Gonzalo Jiménes de Quesada (1500?-79), the expedition from Quito under Sebastián de Benalcázar (1480-1551), and the expedition from Venezuela led by the German Nicolaus Federmann (1501-42). Quesada traveled up the Magdalena River, conquered the Chibcha people, and founded Santa Fe de Bogotá (1538). ...
