Ikeda Kikan

A scholar of Japanese literature. Born in Tottori Prefecture. After graduating from Tokyo Higher Normal School, he graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. He later became a professor at the University of Tokyo. He is a doctor of literature and an authority on Heian period literature, particularly The Tale of Genji. He held a leading position in the academic world due to his theory and practical work in classical philology. He has written many books, including Studies on the Tales of Ise (2 volumes) (1935, 1936), Studies on the Critical Treatment of the Classics (3 volumes) (1941), The Complete Works of the Tale of Genji (8 volumes) (1953-1956), Life and Literature in the Heian Period (1965), and The Selected Works of Ikeda Kamekan (4 volumes) (1968).

国文学者。鳥取県生まれ。東京高等師範学校を経て東京帝国大学国文学科卒業。のち東大教授。文学博士。平安期文学、とくに『源氏物語』研究の権威。古典文献学の理論と実作業によって学界の指導的地位にあった。『伊勢(いせ)物語に就きての研究』2冊（1935、1936）、『古典の批判的処置に関する研究』3冊（1941）、『源氏物語大成』8冊（1953～1956）、『平安時代の生活と文学』（1965）、『池田亀鑑選集』4冊（1968）など、多数の著述がある。
