A researcher of the Edo period. Born in Hachioji, Tokyo. His real name was Genryu. He researched the politics, customs, literature, and culture of the Edo period, and left behind a vast body of work. As an independent researcher, many of his works, such as "Edo no chinbutsu" (1913), "Iga no suigetsu" (1918), "Edokko" (1933), and "Torimono no hanashi" (1934), were written in the form of reading material, and as such are lacking as academic research, but they are recognized as having built the foundations for today's Edo studies research.
