Parallelism is the degree of deviation of a planar or linear feature that should be parallel to a datum (plane or line) that serves as the reference for machine parts, etc., from a geometrically correct plane or line that is parallel to it. There are four types: linear or planar features relative to a datum plane, and linear or planar features relative to a datum line. The parallelism of the measuring surfaces of outside micrometers, calipers, and length measuring instruments is important in terms of accuracy. The parallelism of the V-V plane and V-plane that form the guideway of machine tools also affects machining accuracy.

平行度は，機械部品などの基準とするデータム(平面または直線)に対して，平行であるべき平面形体または直線形体が，平行にある幾何学的に正しい平面または直線からの狂っている大きさである。データム平面に対する直線形体または平面形体，データム直線に対する直線形体または平面形体の四つがある。外側マイクロメーター，ノギス，測長器の測定面の平行度は精度上重要である。工作機械の案内面を形成するV‐V面，V‐平面の平行度も加工精度に影響を与える。
