Jadeite (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒスイ輝石(翡翠輝石) - ひすいきせき（英語表記）jadeite

A type of alkali pyroxene. The chemical composition of pure pyroxene is NaAlSi ₂ O ₆ . It generally contains small amounts of Ca, Mg, Fe ²⁺ and Fe ³⁺ . It can be colorless, white, green, or greenish blue, or rarely blue or purple. Monoclinic crystal system. Long columnar crystals. Mohs hardness 6, specific gravity 3.24-3.43. It occurs in veins or chunks in rocks that have been metamorphosed from the low-temperature, high-pressure type of lanthanide schist facies, or in serpentinite. Jadeite requires high formation pressure to coexist with quartz, and is stable on the high-pressure (low-temperature) side of the line connecting about 5 kbar, 100°C and about 27 kbar, 1000°C on a pressure-temperature relationship diagram, but becomes albite, an end component of plagioclase, at lower pressures (higher temperatures).

アルカリ輝石の一種。純粋なものの化学組成はNaAlSi₂O₆。一般にCa,Mg,Fe^2＋，Fe^3＋を少量含む。無色，白色，緑色，緑青色，まれに青色ないし紫色。単斜晶系。長柱状結晶。モース硬度6，比重3.24～3.43。低温高圧型のランセン石片岩相の変成作用をうけた岩石中や，蛇紋岩中に脈状または塊状に産する。ヒスイ輝石が石英とともに共存するには高い生成圧力が必要とされ，圧力と温度の関係図上で約5kbar,100℃と約27kbar,1000℃を結ぶ線の高圧(低温)側で安定であり，それより低圧(高温)側では斜長石の端成分であるアルバイトになってしまう。
