Andersen, H.

[Speed skating]
The three Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland have long reigned as the speed skating powerhouses, but in recent years countries such as the United States, Russia, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan have been emerging as leaders. Among them, names that will be remembered long ago include O. Matthiesen (Norway), who dominated all four events at the 1912 World Championships and whose 1,500m world record he set in 1914 stood unbeaten for 23 years; C. Thunberg (Finland), who won a total of five gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics; I. Barangrud, who won four gold medals at the 1928 and 1936 Olympics; H. Andersen (Norway), who set a world record in the 10,000m in 1952 and won three gold medals by a large margin at the same Olympics; Y. Grishin (Soviet Union), who won the 500m and 1,500m at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics; A. Schenk (Netherlands), who won the triple crown in all events except for the 500m at the Sapporo Olympics (1972) and won all four events at the World Championships two weeks later; and E. Heiden (United States), who continued to win all events in the World Championships over a three-year period from 1977 onwards and in the 1980 Olympics (five events). For women, the World Championships were held late, starting in 1936, and the Olympic event in 1960, but it has produced many great athletes, including L. Skovrikova (Soviet Union).
