Kojima Bay

Japanese: 児島湾 - こじまわん

A bay in the eastern part of the Kojima Peninsula in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture. In the early modern period, the area was about 120 ^km2 , but now most of it has been reclaimed, and the remaining water area in the western part has been desalinated to form Lake Kojima. During the Edo period, reclamation work was carried out by the Ikeda Domain of Okayama, and by the beginning of the Meiji period, the area had been reduced to 70 ^km2 . After the Meiji period, reclamation was carried out by the Fujita Group of Osaka, and Fujita Village was formed. After World War II, reclamation was carried out by the national government. The reclaimed land is known as an advanced agricultural area that adopted machinery early on. Fishing villages such as Seno and Hachihama developed along the coast of the old Kojima Bay.

岡山県南部，児島半島の東部にある湾。近世初期は面積約 120km²であったが，現在では大部分が干拓され，残りの水域も西部は淡水化して児島湖となっている。江戸時代岡山の池田藩によって干拓工事が進められ，明治初年には 70km²に縮小した。明治以後，大阪の藤田組によって干拓が進められ，藤田村が形成された。なお第2次世界大戦後は国営により干拓が進められた。干拓地は機械を早くから取入れた先進農業地として知られている。旧児島湾沿岸には妹尾 (せのお) ，八浜 (はちはま) などの漁村が発達していた。
