Its abbreviation is Hyi. It is a small constellation in the southern sky. It is one of the twelve constellations newly established by the 16th century German astronomer Johann Bayer (1572-1625). The male is called Hydrus, while the female is called Hydra, but in Japanese the former is translated as sea snake and the latter as water snake. There are no bright stars, and it is a part of the sky that cannot be seen at all in Japan. Its approximate position is 2h40m in right ascension and -72° in declination. It reaches its highest point in the meridian at 8pm in late December. [Ishida Goro] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
