Blowout dune

...As a result, the ground is uniformly lowered or partially hollowed out, leaving behind elliptical deflation hollows several meters deep and several tens of meters in diameter. In cases where the cliffs of a plateau are made of sand, wind erosion cuts the sand layer and blows out the plateau surface, creating hairpin-shaped eroded sand dunes (blowout dunes). In Japan, examples of this can be seen at Ajigaura, which faces the Kashima Nada Sea, and near Shiriyazaki on the Shimokita Peninsula.
