A former town in Ochi District, central Shimane Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, bordering Hiroshima Prefecture to the south. The Hamada Expressway runs through the town. Dewa, the main settlement on the banks of the Izuha River, a tributary of the Gono River, was known for its cattle markets. The town raises dairy cows and produces rice, vegetables, tobacco leaves, and shiitake mushrooms. It also engages in forestry. In October 2004, it merged with Iwami Town and Usumi Village in Ochi District to become a town, Onan Town. Area: 207.83 km2 . Population: 5,056 (2003).

A town in Nishitama County, central Tokyo. Located in the western part of the Sayama Hills, the Hachiko Line runs through the town. During the Edo period, it was a key location on the Ome Kaido road. Machine and metal factories are located here, and the town is rapidly developing into a residential area. Dairy farming, vegetable and flower cultivation are carried out, and Sayama tea and Murayama-Oshima Tsumugi silk are local specialties. The southern part is part of the U.S. Yokota Air Base. 16.85 km2 . Population: 33,497 (2010).

An old town in the northern part of the Shimabara Peninsula, Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. A rural area facing the northern slope of the Unzen volcano and the Ariake Sea, where rice, wheat, and mandarin oranges are actively cultivated. The Shimabara Railway runs through the area. In October 2005, it merged with the towns of Kunimi, Agatsuma, Aino, Chijiwa, Obama, and Minamikushiyama in Nishitakaki District to become Unzen City. 26.18 km2 . 6,004 people (2003).

A former town in Funai-gun, central Kyoto Prefecture. Occupying the upper reaches of the Takaya-gawa River, a tributary of the Yura-gawa River, most of the area is mountain forest, with many red pines, and famous as a producer of matsutake mushrooms. Its main industries are agriculture and forestry. It is the junction of national highways 9 and 173. In October 2005, it merged with Tanba-cho and Wachi-cho in Funai-gun to become Kyotanba-cho in Funai-gun. 109.73 km2 . 5,343 people (2003).

長崎県南高来(みなみたかき)郡,島原半島北部の旧町。雲仙火山北斜面と有明海に臨む農村地域で,米麦作のほか,ミカン栽培が活発である。島原鉄道が通じる。2005年10月,西高来郡国見町,吾妻町,愛野町,千々石町,小浜町,南串山町と合併し市制,雲仙市となる。26.18km2。6004人(2003)。

京都府中部,船井郡の旧町。由良川の支流高屋川上流域を占め,大部分が山林でアカマツが多く,マツタケの産地として有名。農林業が主。国道9号線と173号線の分岐点。2005年10月,船井郡丹波町,和知町と合併し町制,船井郡京丹波町となる。109.73km2。5343人(2003)。
