Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

1886‐1969
German-born architect who later worked in the United States. Son of a master stonemason in Aachen. In Berlin, he worked under furniture designer Paul B. Paul, and then from 1908 to 1911 in the office of Paul Behrens, who had begun his career as a design consultant for AEG (since 1907). In 1912, he became independent after designing a house for the wealthy Dutchman Kröller-Müller, but enlisted in the military during World War I. After the war, he joined the Berlin avant-garde artists' group, the November Group, and served as head of the architecture department.

ドイツに生まれ，後半アメリカで活躍した建築家。アーヘンの石工親方の子。ベルリンで，家具デザイナーのパウルB.Paulのもとで，ついで1908‐11年AEG社デザイン顧問(1907以降)として活躍しはじめたP.ベーレンスの事務所で働く。12年，オランダの富豪クレーラー･ミュラーの邸宅設計を機に自立したものの，第1次大戦のため軍務に服する。戦後ベルリンの前衛芸術家集団〈11月グループ〉に参加し，建築部長を務める。
