1886‐1969 German-born architect who later worked in the United States. Son of a master stonemason in Aachen. In Berlin, he worked under furniture designer Paul B. Paul, and then from 1908 to 1911 in the office of Paul Behrens, who had begun his career as a design consultant for AEG (since 1907). In 1912, he became independent after designing a house for the wealthy Dutchman Kröller-Müller, but enlisted in the military during World War I.
