Ivanhoe - Ivanhoe (English spelling)

Japanese: アイバンホー - あいばんほー(英語表記)Ivanhoe
Ivanhoe - Ivanhoe (English spelling)

A historical novel by the British novelist Walter Scott. Published in 1819. It weaves together fact and fiction from history, such as Cedric's plot to restore the Saxon monarchy that had been conquered by the Normans, Richard I (the Lionheart)'s expedition to the Holy Land, and the wicked schemes of the king's younger brother John (later King John of Magna Carta) who tries to take the throne while Richard I is away. It is a tale of ups and downs featuring the hero Ivanhoe (Cedric's son), the Saxon princess Rowena who loves him, the pretty Jewish girl Rebecca, and Robin Hood and his gang. The scene where Ivanhoe, who has secretly returned home, defeats the knights on John's side at Ashby's magnificent joust is particularly famous. It is mentioned in the entry on "Interval Theory" in Natsume Soseki's Literary Theory.
