A novel by Yukio Mishima. Published by Kawade Shobo in 1949 (Showa 24). It traces the growth of "I", believed to be the author himself, up to adolescence, focusing on sexual aspects. "I", who feels sexual desire for men, eventually falls in love with his friend's younger sister Sonoko, but she marries another man and later meets "I". However, "I" is never connected to her. While written in the form of a confession from a sexual deviant, the intellectually refined style of writing highlights the isolation of a young man. The title, "Confessions of a Mask", can be interpreted as a methodical confession if an I-novel is considered a "confession of the true face". This novel, which gives a sense of European intellectual creativity, is known as one of Mishima's early masterpieces.
