Esker (English spelling)

A small hill or ridge of sand and gravel formed by fluvioglacial water (Close: 1866, Charlesworth: 1957), where fluvioglacial refers to water flowing at the bottom of a glacier (Random House: 1994). Sand and gravel are deposited along the water that flows through a tunnel at the bottom of the glacier, and when the ice melts later, a low hill remains. This hill is called an esker (Kimura et al.: 1973). Eschar, escar, and eskar are all synonymous. It is also called oscr, asar, and serpent kame (Kimura et al.: 1973). The Irish word eiscir and the Welsh words esqair and escair all mean ridge. Osar (Charlesworth: 1957).

融氷流水（fluvioglacial）による砂や礫の小山または山嶺で［Close : 1866, Charlesworth : 1957］，fluvioglacialは氷河の底の流水によること［ランダムハウス : 1994］．氷河の底をトンネルを作って流れる水流に沿って砂礫が堆積し後で氷が融けると低い丘陵が残る．この丘陵をエスカーという［木村ほか : 1973］．eschar, escar, eskarなどはみな同義．oscr, asar, serpent kameと呼ばれることもある［木村ほか : 1973］．アイルランド語のeiscirや，ウェールズ語のesqair, escairはいずれも嶺の意味．オサアル（osar）［Charlesworth : 1957］．
