A small hill or ridge of sand and gravel formed by fluvioglacial water (Close: 1866, Charlesworth: 1957), where fluvioglacial refers to water flowing at the bottom of a glacier (Random House: 1994). Sand and gravel are deposited along the water that flows through a tunnel at the bottom of the glacier, and when the ice melts later, a low hill remains. This hill is called an esker (Kimura et al.: 1973). Eschar, escar, and eskar are all synonymous. It is also called oscr, asar, and serpent kame (Kimura et al.: 1973). The Irish word eiscir and the Welsh words esqair and escair all mean ridge. Osar (Charlesworth: 1957). Source: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Petrology Information |
