[Died] 449 BC. Cyprus. Ancient Greek Athenian general and politician. One of the most capable commanders born in Athens. Son of Miltiades and Hegesipysi, daughter of Thracian king Olorus. Distinguished in the battle against the Achaemenid Empire at Salamis in 480 BC, he was elected annually as one of the ten-member general council (stratēgos). In 478 BC, he played a key role in the formation of the Delian League, and as its commander-in-chief, he drove the Persian forces from the Thracian coast, and around 466 BC, he destroyed a Phoenician fleet of twice the size with a fleet of 200 ships at the mouth of the Eurymedon River in Pamphylia, depriving Persia of naval control in the eastern Mediterranean. He later expelled Persian forces from Chersonesus in Thrace, and subjugated Thasos, which had withdrawn from the Delian League, and rejoined it as a vassal state. He was accused by Pericles of having been bribed by the Macedonian king, and although he was found innocent, he lost his credibility. Furthermore, the Spartan navy, which was hostile to Sparta, turned against him, and he was sentenced to ten years of exile in 461 BC. Later, Pericles allowed him to return to the country, and when an expedition against Persia was planned, he was given command of the navy again, but he died during the Cyprus campaign.

古代ギリシア，アテネの将軍，政治家。アテネの生んだ最も有能な司令官の一人。ミルチアデスとトラキア王オロロスの娘ヘゲシピュシの子。前 480年サラミスでの対アケメネス朝ペルシア戦で頭角を現し，以後 10人から成る将軍評議会員 stratēgosの一人に毎年選出された。前 478年デロス同盟の結成の立役者となり，その総司令官としてトラキア沿岸からペルシア勢力を駆逐，前 466年頃には 200隻の艦隊でそれに倍するフェニキア艦隊をパンフリアのエウリュメドン河口で撃滅，ペルシアの東地中海における制海権を奪った。その後もトラキアのケルソネソスからペルシア勢力を排し，デロス同盟から離脱したタソスを屈服させ，従属国として同盟に再加入させた。しかしマケドニア王から買収されたとしてペリクレスらに訴えられ，無罪となったものの信望を失った。さらにスパルタに敵意をもつ海軍も親スパルタ派の彼から離反し，前 461年陶片追放 (オストラシズム ) によって 10年間の国外追放を宣された。その後ペリクレスのはからいで帰国を許され，ペルシアに対する遠征が計画されると，再び海軍の指揮をゆだねられたが，キプロス作戦中に没した。
