Born: May 22, 1733, Paris [Died] April 15, 1808. Paris. French landscape painter. After studying under the sculptor L. Slotz, he went to Rome in 1754 and stayed in Italy for a long time. He painted Roman landscapes with ruins and ancient architecture with a poetic feeling, and was called "Robert of the Ruins." He returned to France in 1765, and the following year, in 1766, he became a member of the Royal Academie, and later its president. He was briefly imprisoned during the French Revolution. His major works include "Interior of the Temple of Diana at Nîmes" (1787, Louvre Museum), "Pont du Gard" (1787, Louvre Museum), and "Imagination of the Grand Gallery of the Louvre in Ruins" (1796, Louvre Museum).
