...From this, a new performance style called be-bop (or bop for short) was born, based on the ingenuity of both parties. Bop added new ingenuity to the three elements of rhythm, melody, and harmony. Originally, jazz was called off-beat music because the accent on the first and third beats of a four-beat rhythm was shifted to the second and fourth beats. However, bop divided the four beats into eight parts based on the sense of rhythm, and placed the accent on the "to" part of "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and...". This was also called "off-beat", and this subdivision of rhythm made the phrasing more talkative than previous jazz. ...
