Ruins from the Byzantine period in Greece. In 1248/1249, the Frankish Prince of Achaea, William de Villeharduin, built a fort here. In 1262, Mystras was handed over to the Byzantine Empire and became the central city of the Peloponnese. It is famous for its monasteries, including the Pantanassa Monastery, and also gave birth to a culture representative of the Palaiologos Renaissance. After 1460, it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire (Turkey), except for a short period. After Greek independence (1830), Mystras was virtually abandoned with the restoration of Sparta. The ruins were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1989 (World Cultural Heritage). [Masato Furuyama] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
