Eon
A Buddhist monk from the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China. He is known as the founder of the Pure Land sect and is called "Huiyuan of Lushan." His common surname was Jia. He entered Buddhism with Daoan, worshipped the statue of Muryoju Buddha, practiced contemplative nembutsu, and founded a nembutsu society called the White Lotus Society. He came into conflict with the powerful Eastern Jin Huan Xuan by preaching about the independence of religious faith. He wrote the book "The Great Rule of Mahayana."

Eon

A Buddhist monk from the Northern Zhou and Sui dynasties of China. Born in Dunhuang. Commonly surnamed Li. In his later years he lived in the Jingying Temple in Chang'an, so he was known as "Huiyuan of Jingying Temple." He belonged to the Southern Dao school of the Jiron sect and was a leading authority on hermeneutics. He was the only person to oppose Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou dynasty's abolition of Buddhism in 578, and defended Buddhism. His book, Mahāyāna Yizhang, is a compilation of Buddhist studies from the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

慧遠【えおん】

中国,北周・隋代の仏僧。敦煌(とんこう)の出身。俗姓李(り)氏。晩年長安の浄影(じょうよう)寺に住したので〈浄影寺の慧遠〉という。地論(じろん)宗南道派に属し,解釈学の第一人者。578年北周の武帝の廃仏にただ一人反対し,仏法を守った。著書《大乗義章》は南北朝仏教学の集大成。
